The death of Rostam and Rakhsh is one of the most tragic stories in the Shahnameh. Shaghad, Rostam's half brother, treacherously prepared several pits filled with spears and blades in a hunting ground. While hunting, Rostam and Rakhsh fell into one of the pits and were badly wounded. In his final moments, Rostam realized that Shaghad was behind the betrayal and killed him with an arrow. Afterward, Rostam and Rakhsh died in the same pit, a painful end for Iran's greatest hero.
