Fundamentals and Beyond: Drawing and Painting
Our newest adult art class taught by Elio Guevara explores the process of representational drawing and painting. If you have always wanted to learn to draw or paint something in a realistic sense or are looking to refine your skills, this class is for you! In a small group setting you will be provided with individual instruction based on your skill level and medium preference.

Why In-Person Classes?
A lot of people ask, “Why wouldn’t I just watch free art lessons online?”. Some may think online art lessons will provide you with the same skills as an in-person instructor but in reality, that’s not possible. Here are some reasons why representational painting is learned best with personal guidance:
Questions Need Reliable Answers
- Obviously, if you are just watching a video, there is no one to answer any questions you might have. Sure, you can “research” with Google, but it would take a significant amount of time to find a reliable source with an appropriate answer. Even then, it’s hard to be sure you are finding accurate information. With our expert art instructors, you will receive an answer instantly that you can trust from their many years of experience.
Progression Comes from Feedback
- In order to keep progressing with your skills, you need direct feedback from a teacher. While it is healthy to have the mindset of “There’s no wrong way to make art”, with representational painting there are specific techniques that are needed to create the desired realistic effect. Without direction of which skills should be used where it is easy to get lost or stuck throughout the process.
Community Breeds Creativity
- Being in a group setting, learning alongside other people, has its own benefits as well. They may ask questions you haven’t thought of yet, offering an unexpected opportunity to learn that may not have ever presented itself otherwise. Seeing other people work alongside you can also spur inspiration for your own artistic vision. It can also be encouraging to know there are other people attempting a challenging activity and seeking guidance just like you.
3 Benefits of Taking Art Classes as an Adult:
As we progress through life, building our careers and families, it becomes challenging to find time for personal enrichment. It is also important to note that it is truly a privilege to not only be able to find the time but the funds to attend an art class regularly. So, our attitude at Noor is that if you do have that privilege, you should take advantage of it! Having enriching activities within your busy schedule is something that can push your life from surviving to thriving! Here are some ways that painting classes will help you thrive:
- Improves Mental Health
The creative process is often deeply connected with one’s emotions, offering an opportunity for non-verbal self-expression. While the importance of traditional talk therapy cannot be stressed enough, (and our instructors are NOT therapists) art in general offers lots of indirect ways that have the potential to be mentally life changing. One simple example is the sense of mindfulness created by focusing intently on a physical experience, (like drawing or painting) effectively helping reduce obsessive or automatic negative thoughts.
2. Grows Your Social Circle
As our lives become busier, something often left on the backburner is spending time with friends and making new friends. Making art alongside others can be a very strong bonding experience. Putting significant time, effort, and emotion into something, allowing other people to witness that, AND witnessing other people doing it instantly creates a sense of community. So, when you participate in an art class you are really getting a 2 for 1 deal with the automatic friends you’ve gained!
3. Forms a Sense of Accomplishment
I cannot express how many people instantly say “Oh I could never do that” or “Oh I’m not creative at all” when offered the opportunity to learn artistic skills. Believe it or not, it is a CHOICE to have this mindset, and if you constantly choose to limit yourself with that mindset then it will be impossible to learn new things. All you have to do is open your mind a tiny bit to push past this. Yes, it takes time, effort, and practice to be able to make something that you are proud of. But putting time into something that you previously doubted yourself on makes that feeling of accomplishment so much stronger than going through the motions to finish something you already know how to do.
